Between 20,000 to 30,000 black bears live in the foothills and forests of Idaho. Due to the ever-increasing human population in the area, interactions between humans and black bears are becoming more and more common.
As about one third of their year is spent in hibernation, black bears must consume enormous amounts of food throughout the rest of the year. Most of their diets consist of vegetarian options like berries, nuts, and other plants. However, bears have very strong noses, and can smell foods up to five miles away! That is why many hungry bears may calm their grumbling tummies with the scraps found in our garbage cans, making a feast out of our trash. One man's trash really is another BEAR'S treasure.
